Former Pace University football captain Tyler Owns apparently sent out this image of himself giving the Nazi salute in Confederate garb via Snapchat.
Pace University football captain Tyler Owens failed to get away with a slap-dash racist Snapchat clip which showed him giving the Nazi salute clad in a crude uniform made of Confederate flags under a headline that read “The Grand Wizard” — a reference to the leader of the Klu Klux Klan.
The clip was presented to the Pace Chronicle by a group of African American students and athletes, according to the New York Daily News, after Owens sent it out via the time sensitive video message app, Snapchat.
The Anti-Defamation League on Friday expressed shock over the image. ADL New York Regional Director Evan R. Bernstein said the image showed “the need for ongoing education to ensure that university students fully understand the roots of racism, antisemitism, and the consequences of unchecked bigotry and hate.”
The ADL lauded Pace University President Steven Friedman for acting swiftly to launch an investigation and strip Owens of his role. The former captain will not play until the investigation completes, said Friedman.
“The photograph is highly offensive and contrary to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and embracing the ethnic and cultural differences among students, faculty, and staff that are deeply held at Pace University and its Athletics Department,” Friedman wrote in an email to the Pace community, according to the Daily News.
“That is especially true at this time when states throughout the country are recognizing the symbolic offensiveness of displaying the Confederate flag and the importance of accepting those with different backgrounds is being sorely tested by the refugee crisis in Europe,” he said.
Earlier this year, the 49ers’ Jarryd Hayne apologized over a tweet claiming Jews were responsible for killing Jesus that also drew the ire of the ADL.
