Vandals mowed a swastika into the lawn outside a primary school in Kingston upon Hull in the eastern U.K., the Jewish Chronicle reported on Wednesday.

Hull suffered massively from bombing raids during World War II, so the Nazi symbol acutely sparked outrage among local residents.

Shirley Hare, 71, discovered the swastika during an early morning stroll, according to the Chronicle, calling it a “terrible and stupid thing to do.”

She contacted the local council and called for it to be removed, expressing shock that it had been allowed to remain for several days already.

“If I lived a bit closer, I would be tempted to get out there with a shovel and dig it up myself,” she told the Chronicle.

More than 1,200 people died during the “Hull Blitz” at the height of World War II and some 3,000 were wounded.

Police had yet to apprehend suspects over the vandalism.
