Security at many UK Jewish sites was beefed up with “unprecedented government funding” after simultaneous terrorist attacks Friday, claimed by Islamic State, killed more than 132 in Paris.
The Community Security Trust, a British charity that provides protection to Jewish community centers in the UK, was in contact with police and the government to clarify the implications of the weekend’s grisly assaults.
“CST increased its security cover at [synagogues] on [the Jewish Sabbath] and we will continue seeing what more can be done,” the group said in a statement.
A spokesperson said the group received “unprecedented levels of government funding” this year for hiring security personnel to complement the CST’s core volunteers and staff.
The government funding arrived amid a series of terrorist attacks against Jewish targets in Europe earlier this year: a kosher supermarket in Paris; a synagogue in Copenhagen. A Jewish museum was also attacked in Brussels, in May 2014.
“We have recruited and fully trained hundreds of new volunteers this year. All of this is because of the situation that these latest attacks confirm,” said the spokesperson, referring to those antisemitic acts of terror.
“This Shabbat, our security cover increased at synagogues throughout the UK and we will, as before, continue striving to do more, as demanded by our community — and as we demand of ourselves,” the spokesperson said.
A recent EU report seemed to indicate increasing levels of antisemitic attacks across Europe; numbers were relatively high in Germany, France and the UK, among the EU members surveyed.
Earlier this year, police in Spain claimed to foil an ISIS-affiliated terror ring plotting to attack synagogues and Jewish bookshops.
