A senior adviser to President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is on the verge of signing multi-billion-dollar arms contracts with Iran, Israeli news site nrg reported on Monday.

Vladimir Kozhin, a presidential aide responsible for military and technical cooperation, told the Russian daily Izvestia that Russia is looking forward to signing the deals, possibly prior to the lifting in five years of arms import sanctions on Iran, in accordance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“Once the restrictions on the Islamic Republic [of Iran] are removed, I expect a significant upgrade in technical military cooperation between our two countries,” Kozhin said.

According to nrg, Kozhin also noted that Iran’s interest in the deals is great, because its military requires modernization and overhaul in virtually all areas. “Since it’s a big country with a large army, there will be contracts worth billions,” he said.
