The IDF has tested a missile-to-missile active protection system on its Namer (“tiger”) armored personnel carrier, Israeli media reported Thursday.
The Trophy system, known in Hebrew as Me’il Ruah, or literally “windbreaker,” would protect the armored vehicle with a 360 degree radar system that detects incoming projectiles before firing a neutralizing missile from a rotating launcher.
The Israel Ground Forces performed the tests together with Defense Ministry’s tank program.
It was revealed in 2014 that Israeli arms manufacturer Rafael, Israel Aerospace Industries and Israeli Military Industries were developing the protection system for Israel’s armored vehicles.
Lt. Gen. Baruch Matzliah, the Defense Ministry’s Tank Program Administrator, said according to 0404 News that the system had been successfully incorporated into the Namer APCs and said other vehicles would also be tested with the defense system.
“A Namer with the ‘windbreaker’ will provide the utmost protection for IDF soldiers, giving them security and significant advantage on the battlefield,” said Matzliah.
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon approved the development of 200 new Namer armored vehicles following Operation Protective Edge in 2014, bringing the total number of such vehicles in Israel’s infantry to 531, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.
Seven IDF soldiers were killed in their APC during the 2014 Gaza war, when their vehicle was fired on by Hamas gunmen with an anti-tank missile.
