Another week, another attempt to vilify Israel. Once again, this attempt comes from two NGOs — HaMoked and B’Tselem — that receive funding from the New Israel Fund.
These two organizations combined their resources to publish an unscientific report alleging that Israel tortures terrorists at the Shikma prison. This “un-biased report,” covered extensively by Israeli and foreign media, failed to mention the horrific crimes committed by the terrorists in question. The report argues that these terrorists were arrested in the middle of the night, handcuffed, and interrogated. Is it not standard procedure for terrorist murderers to be arrested at any time that they are located by the police?
The report is based entirely on the testimony of accused and convicted terrorists. None of the claims are fact-checked or verified. The report is completely biased.
The specific complaints of torture are often questionable. Many of the interviewees complained of being strip-searched, yet strip-searching upon admission to prison is standard procedure in many countries, including the US and Israel. Searches are intended to prevent contraband from being transported. The interviewees claim this is a humiliating experience. That may be true, but it is not considered torture.
It is particularly laughable that the report details torture techniques allegedly used by the Palestinian Preventive Security Force on the same individuals, but only condemns Israel for using the intelligence that the PA had gathered through torture. In essence, the report acknowledges that the Palestinian Authority uses torture; but, as usual, Israel is the villain.
The authors of the report are not amateurs; they know what they are doing. They emphasize claims of torture, describing them multiple times in detail to generate sympathy, so as to underscore a systemic policy. However, there is a deeper issue at hand here. These terrorists are being arrested because of their crimes. The best way to stop the interrogations, if that is in fact the true goal of Hamoked and B’Tselem, is to stop the terror against Israel. But that’s just logic.
