A massive crop circle in the shape of a swastika mysteriously appeared on a British farm recently, the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the Nazi symbol — approximately 150-180-feet in diameter — was cut into a huge field in the Wiltshire countryside, and its owner was shocked to discover it on his property.
Hugh Newman, an ancient-mysteries author who happened upon news of the carving on Facebook, said, “I rushed there to check it out and I met the farmer there and he was keen for me to not go into the field. I flew my drone over it and got some good shots.”
“You get teams of hoaxers going around and doing crop circles without anyone’s permission and if they get caught they can be prosecuted for it,” Newman said. “But some of the circles they cut are so advanced and difficult to do that it is actually land art.”
Newman added that while the farmer “didn’t say much to me… he was a bit concerned by the symbol and he saw the negative connotation of it when he realized what it looked like.”
While today popularly recognized as a Nazi icon, the original swastika symbol dates back some 5,000 years to the Buddhist religion. The crop-circle formation possesses those elements that more closely resemble a Buddhist swastika rather than a Nazi one. For instance, only the ancient symbol includes four dots encircling the criss-cross shape, and, while the Nazi swastika has blunt edges, the Buddhist version is rounded.
