At the beginning of this year’s AIPAC conference in Washington – where 13,000 Pro-Israel citizens gathered to hear President Obama and others address America’s support for the security interests of the Jewish State and the pressing issues it faces in the years ahead – former U.S. Congressman Jane Harman told the audience that it wasn’t in the national security interests of Israel to play “political football”.
Following that statement, and President Obama’s speech at AIPAC, the Republican Jewish Coalition released a statement accusing Mr. Obama of lacking in support of Israel, referring to November as the time in which voters will have their say on the President’s Israel record.
“President Obama once again came before the AIPAC conference with a speech where his strong rhetoric does not match his administration’s weak record on support of Israel. Obama said, “As you examine my commitment, you don’t just have to count on my words, you can look at my deeds.”
The RJC noted several examples of what they view as the President’s lack of definitive resolve in supporting Israel, including military aid and the administration’s request that Israel halt all settlement building in order to provide an easier climate for peace negotiations.
“Obama’s deeds include unprecedented pressure on Israel not to build in its eternal capital of Jerusalem, cutting critical military aid to joint US-Israel missile defense program in a time of need, adopting as U.S. policy the Palestinian demand that Israel accept 1948 armistice lines as the basis for a final settlement, and failing to holding Palestinian leaders accountable for their refusal to keep their peace-process commitments,” the RJC said in a statement to reporters.
The coalition, which firmly opposes the President’s reelection, believes his record on Israel will be a weakness in a seeking a second term.
“The Jewish community is too smart to fall for election-year revisionist history. We will remember in November.”
