‘I’ve Never Felt More Jewish in My Life,’ Says ‘Ellen Show’ Executive Producer After Receiving Swimming Lessons From Olympian Michael Phelps
by Shiryn Ghermezian
In a new segment on NBC‘s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” this week, the program’s Jewish executive producer Andy Lassner is given swimming lessons by world champion Michael Phelps.
Introducing the match-up for the premiere of “Average Andy,” DeGeneres says the segment was created so “extraordinary people who are the best in the world teach Andy, who is a completely average person, how to do what they do.”
At the outset of the first episode, Andy warns the 23-time Olympic gold medalist that he has not swum laps “since Jewish camp, when I was a little kid.” Then, after struggling to keep up with the sporting superstar as they race across the pool, an exasperated Lassner concludes: “I’ve never felt more Jewish in my life.”
