Republican Donald Trump will be America’s 45th president after scoring a huge upset over Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s election, following a bitterly contested campaign.
Shortly after 2:30 a.m. Eastern time early Wednesday morning, CNN reported that Clinton had telephoned Trump to concede the election.
A few minutes later, CNN reported that Trump had won Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes, pushing him over the 270 needed to win the presidency.
In his victory speech delivered at the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, Trump said it was “time for America to bind the wounds of division” and “come together as one united people.”
“America will no longer settle for anything less than the best,” Trump pledged. “We must reclaim our country’s destiny and dream big and bold and daring.”
Addressing the international community, Trump said, “While we will always put America’s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone — all people and all other nations. We will seek common ground, not hostility, partnership, not conflict.”
Just before 10:30 p.m., CNN called Ohio and its 18 electoral votes for Trump. Around 15 minutes later, it called Virginia and its 13 electoral votes for Clinton. Shortly after 11 p.m., North Carolina — with 15 electoral votes — was called for Trump. A half hour later, Florida — with its prize of 29 electoral votes — was called for the Republican candidate.
At 2 a.m., Clinton campaign manager John Podesta announced that the Democratic candidate would not speak publicly about the results of the election until the morning.
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, Trump’s electoral vote margin stood at 289-215, with the states of New Hampshire, Michigan and Minnesota remaining too close to call. In the nationwide popular vote, Clinton held a narrow 47.7%-47.5% lead.
Trump’s largest haul of electoral votes came from Texas, with 38. The largest state Clinton won was California, with 55 electoral votes.
