The British revisionist historian spotlighted in the new movie “Denial” has embarked on a “secretive tour” to “spread his vile message” ahead of the film’s release in the UK, the Daily Mail reported on Thursday.
Holocaust denier David Irving confirmed the existence of his lecture series — which began November 23 and will make its way to 21 different locations — but told the Daily Mail that the exact venues are to be revealed only to “vetted ticket-buyers, to evade anti-fascist protesters.” He also acknowledged that the effort was likely to benefit from the publicity surrounding the movie’s release.
The film tells the story of Irving’s 1996 libel lawsuit against renowned Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt — portrayed by actress Rachel Weisz — for calling him a denier of history in her book Denying the Holocaust. Though Lipstadt is an American and the book was published first in the US, Irving took her to court in Britain, where the burden of proof rests on the defendant. This meant that Lipstadt and her legal team needed to prove that the Holocaust did, in fact, take place.
Irving lost the case and his reputation was significantly tarnished, after the judge in his decision described Irving as an “active Holocaust denier” and an antisemite and racist, and said that “he associates with Right-wing extremists who promote neo-Nazism.”
Irving, who was not involved in the film’s production, called its version of events “inaccurate.”
Responding to news of the lecture series — titled, “David Irving looks back: My 50 years defending real history against its enemies” — UK antisemitism expert Jonathan Sacerdoti called it a “pathetic last bid for attention from a man who has been rejected as a mainstream historian.”
Speaking to The Algemeiner in June, Lipstadt said she hopes the film’s portrayal of her trial against Irving — based on her book, History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier — will “educate and show the world the absolute ludicrous, delusional and absurd quality of Holocaust denial.”
“Denial” premiers in the UK in January. It is currently in theaters in the US.
