The Israeli Air Force conducted three strikes in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula this week, the ISIS-linked Amaq news agency reported on Tuesday, according to the Hebrew media outlet nrg.
The report said the strikes took place in the northern Sinai municipalities of El Arish and Sheikh Zuweid.
It was also reported that Abed Al-Aila Kishta — Hamas’ official liaison with ISIS in Sinai — was killed in recent days, but the cause of his death was not announced.
On Tuesday morning, air raid sirens sounded in a number of southern Israeli communities near the border with Egypt. According to media reports, a projectile launched from Sinai fell inside Egyptian territory. It was unclear whether it was aimed at Israel or was fired as part of fighting between ISIS fighters and Egyptian military forces in Sinai.
In October, The Algemeiner reported that the IDF battalion charged with safeguarding the Egyptian border was stepping up its preparations for potential ISIS attacks.
This past summer, an unnamed former senior Israeli official told Bloomberg that the Jewish state had conducted numerous drone attacks on terrorist targets in Sinai in recent years with Egypt’s blessing.
In 1979, Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace agreement with Israel, though the relationship has at times been strained over the decades. Israel-Egypt ties have improved since President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi took power in Cairo in 2013, after ousting his predecessor, Mohamed Morsi, an Islamist affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.
With shared regional interests — including the containment of Iran and combating ISIS in Sinai and Hamas in the Gaza Strip — relations between Israel and Egypt have continued to blossom during the past few years.
