Hanukkah menorahs are not generally thought of as luxury items, but at a Judaica auction house in Long Island there is one valued at $200,000, WABC-TV New York reported this week, as Jews around the world celebrated the eight-day festival of lights.
The approximately 175-year-old Ukrainian menorah is one of a number of eye-catching hannukiot on display at J. Greenstein and Co. in Cedarhurst.
These are a far cry, however, from the standard menorahs used by everyday Jews over the centuries.
“In the old country, Jews were very, very poor,” Jonathan Greenstein, the owner of the auction house, was quoted as saying. “Some of them couldn’t even afford a menorah, so they would slice a potato in half and dig out eight little holes and that was their menorah for the holiday.”
