A Muslim teenager from Brooklyn was honored by political, community and religious leaders on Friday for assisting in the arrest of a man who attacked a Jewish woman last week on a train, NBC New York reported.
Ahmed Khalifa, 17, was presented by Jewish Assemblyman Dov Hikind with a legislative citation and a new laptop, donated by a local business, to use when he starts college in the fall.
Hikind tweeted that he was “proud of [Khalifa’s] noble and heroic act.” He also expressed hope that others will follow the teen’s example in similar situations, because “hate is unacceptable under any circumstances.”
Khalifa chased Rayvon Jones, 31, after he punched an Orthodox Jewish woman on Brooklyn’s Q train on Dec. 28 and fled. A member of the Jewish neighborhood patrol group Shomrim joined Khalifa in tracking down Jones, whom they saw boarding a bus nearby. Khalifa called 911 and, along with Shomrim volunteers, followed the bus until police arrived and apprehended the assailant.
The victim was treated at Methodist Hospital for bruises and a cut lip. Her attacker was charged with assault.
Khalifa said he does not consider himself a hero, as his behavior under the circumstances was “something everyone should do.”
