Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “had a good friend the last eight years” in the White House, but “Bibi didn’t always recognize it,” outgoing US President Barack Obama asserted in an interview aired on Tuesday.
In a half-hour conversation with Ilana Dayan broadcast on Israel’s Channel 2, Obama said, “There’s an interesting question as to whether he’ll sleep better after Jan. 20” — referring to Netanyahu and the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Defending his decision last month to abstain from the vote on an anti-settlement UN Security Council resolution, Obama said, “I believe it was the best move for peace.”
“The issue for me has been, even as our commitment to Israel’s security is unwavering, what can we do to ensure a long-term prospect for peace?” Obama went on to say.
