Members of a Palestinian family rushed to help rescue Israelis who were injured in a deadly bus accident that took place in the West Bank on Thursday night, the Hebrew news site nrg reported.
Two Israelis — 37-year-old driver Avishai Kroania and 23-year-old Ofir Rahmanov — were killed and seven were injured when an Egged bus plunged into a ravine near Ma’aleh Levona as it was making its way from Jerusalem to Ariel.
Elhanan Kobani — a United Hatzalah ambulance driver who responded to the accident — told nrg, “When I arrived and helped with the evacuation of the injured, I saw three women and four men — local Arabs. I asked them what they were doing and they told me they lived there and when they heard the crash they went outside and climbed down dozens of meters into the ravine where the bus was.”
The Arabs, Kobani said, were the ones who alerted authorities about the accident, which occurred in the middle of a rainy night.
“There was no cell phone reception in the ravine, so the injured could not call for help themselves,” Kobani said. One of the Arabs, he stated, “climbed back up to his home and telephoned the security office at Ma’aleh Levona.
Kobani praised the Arab family for its “determination and humanity.”
“They were there for at least an hour, or hour and a half, in the rain and mud, and helped,” he said.
One of the family members — a 16-year-old girl — showed signs of hypothermia in her feet, as she had left her home in slippers, according to Kobani.
