A Jewish professor at the University of San Diego (USD) told the school’s student paper on Thursday that someone left feces in front of  his office door last semester, two days after the US presidential election.

Rabbi Michael Cherry, who is also an active member of the local Jewish community, explained to USD Student Media, that though he reported the “primitive, cowardly act” to the authorities at the time, he had decided to keep the matter private — until multiple swastikas began appearing in campus bathrooms over the past couple of weeks.

Cherry said that the response of students in his Holocaust class to the antisemitic incidents was troubling. Though many were left feeling embarrassed, angry or incredulous, “None expressed fear. I am afraid too many of us are dangerously naïve or dangerously indifferent.”

USD student Jared Sclar concurred that he is not frightened, but said, “We forget that we’re not totally insulated from hateful extremism as we think we are.”

The appearance of swastikas at USD are among a series of similar events that have been occurring on North American campuses over the past year. As reported by The Algemeiner last month, a swastika crafted from human feces was discovered in a dorm bathroom at the Rhode Island School of Design.
