US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are “bad guys” who “don’t really get it in the fullness of things,” American actor Richard Gere said in a Channel 2 interview while in the Jewish state for the Jerusalem premier of his new film “Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer.”
“It’s all deals to them,” the 67-year-old Philadelphia native — also known for his human rights activism — said.
“Truth is dead, the obvious is dead, language is dead,” he told Channel 2’s Dana Weiss in an interview that will be aired in full on Saturday. “This is a dark time.”
Trump, according to Gere, is “completely damaging the office of the presidency.”
Gere also asserted Trump was partly to blame for the ongoing wave of antisemitism across the US.
“The crudity of his language and ideas…opened a Pandora’s Box,” Gere said. “And I’m not saying he created [the box], but he made it ok to say horrible things and do horrible things.”
In his latest movie, Gere co-stars with Israeli actor Lior Ashkenazi. The film was directed and written by another prominent figure in the Israeli cinema world, Joseph Cedar, best known for his past works “Beaufort” and “Footnote.”
