It is a black day for humanity when a child dies, no less when three are murdered in cold blood.

A world in which this sorrow lives is yet an imperfect world, an immoral world, and one in need of healing and correction.

Worse still, when the speculation over suspects points towards not one, but multiple parties whose ideologies might compel them to commit this heinous act, including and most oft mentioned; Neo Nazis and Islamists.

In the perverse minds of such haters, 8 year old Miriam Monsonego, 6 Year old Aryeh Sandler, 3 Year old Gavriel Sandler and their father Yonatan were born in sin, by virtue of having Jewish parents.

Indeed the history of the Jewish people has shown such suffering and persecution to be an unwarranted byproduct of our covenant.

While Jews across the globe mourn, we can’t help but wonder how safe we actually are? In suburban neighborhoods across the United States or leafy suburbs of London, are we immune to similar outbursts of hate? Did Jewish life in Toulouse not project the self-same aura of serenity and security until the facade was blown away on Monday morning?

These considerations should serve as a call to action and a catalyst for renewed global efforts towards building a safe and secure Jewish future.

The first step is for Jewish communal leaders worldwide to increase efforts directed towards creating a new global security reality whereby Jews and Jewish Institutions become decidedly dangerous and risky targets for would be hate criminals. We must strike the fear of G-d into the hearts of those that would harm our children.

Dedicated and important security groups exist in many countries, but today there is only one Jewish institution worldwide that bears the necessary reputation and capacity, and that is Israel’s Mossad.

The Mossad has a long and illustrious history – albeit largely unconfirmed – in extending its long and swift arm for the cause of Jewish safety around the world.

Most famous among operations of the Mossad that did not directly affect Israeli security, was the organization’s relentless pursuit of Nazi war criminals that continued over decades, resulting in notable successes including the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, letter bombs sent to Alois Brunner and the assassination of Herberts Cukurs in Uruguay.

The Mossad also assisted in evacuations of Bosnian Jews to Israel, helped Russian Refuseniks acquire religious items, smuggled Moroccan Jews out of the country, evacuated Zimbabwean Jews due to fears of persecution by the government and reportedly gathered intelligence on Right Wing Austrian politician Jorg Haider.

The inner workings of the Mossad are highly secretive, as is of course their prioritization process. Which causes are adopted, and which are not. If however the Mossad’s reach is limited by the extent of its resources, Jews should initiate efforts – to the extent that they are legally able – to support and encourage the extensive expansion of the organization’s capacity, activities on behalf of Jewish safety and global impact.

Apparently, if the Mossad were to initiate activity now in Toulouse, it wouldn’t be their first time. According to the book By Way of Deception by Victor Ostrovsky, on April 5th 1979 Mossad agents triggered an explosion which destroyed 60 percent of components being built in Toulouse for an Iraqi nuclear reactor.

Due process is an integral component of the legal system in any vibrant democracy but it certainly wouldn’t be a tragedy if a child killer accidentally drove his moped off a cliff. If an encounter with a Mossad Kidon unit became distinct and likely for would be perpetrators of such vile crimes, surely Jewish children around the world would be safer. As made clear by the Mossad’s motto, taken from Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
