The Palestinian Authority’s (PA) envoy to London said last week he was “not aware” of the April murder of a UK university student by a Palestinian terrorist in Jerusalem, the Jewish News reported on Thursday.
Manuel Hassassian was responding to a question from a student at Imperial College London, during a May 4 lecture on campus, when he made his comments about the stabbing death of 21-year-old Birmingham University student Hannah Bladon at the hands of Jamil Tamimi on a light rail train in the Israeli capital.
Bladon was in Jerusalem taking part in an exchange program with Hebrew University.
Tamimi — who reportedly has a history of mental illness — told Israeli authorities he conducted the attack because he wanted to be killed by police. He was arrested at the scene of the attack and was subsequently found by an Israeli court to be fit to stand trial.
For his actions, Tamimi will now be receiving a $1,000 monthly stipend from the PA — Hassassian’s employer.
Bladon’s death was widely reported by the international media.
On Thursday, Bladon’s funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners, including Israeli Ambassador to the UK Mark Regev, who tweeted, “Deeply moved to be with Hannah’s family and so many others at St John’s Church, Horninglow, attending the service in honour of her memory.”
