Two Israelis were killed and two others wounded in a Palestinian shooting attack in the West Bank on Thursday morning.
The two fatalities were IDF soldiers, while the wounded were a soldier and a civilian.
According to the Hebrew news site Mako, the victims were shot at close range at the Givat Asaf junction in the Binyamin region of the West Bank, on Route 60, northeast of Ramallah. The location is just two kilometers from the site of a shooting on Sunday in which a pregnant Israeli woman was seriously wounded. Her child, a boy, was subsequently delivered by emergency cesarean section and lived for only a few days before passing away.
The IDF said in a statement, “A terrorist got out of his car and opened fire … toward IDF soldiers and civilians that were in the area.” The IDF is searching the area for the shooter and his accomplice, who fled the area on foot toward Ramallah.
The Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom stated that a 20-year-old woman has been transported to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem in critical condition, while a 21-year-old man has been sent to Hadassah Ein Kerem in the capital, also in critical condition.
The head of the trauma unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem said, “We received a 21-year-old wounded man after the attack at Givat Asaf with a serious head wound. At the moment, he is undergoing a first evaluation and at this moment is in the operating room being treated by staff. His condition is grave and we see a threat to his life.”
Israeli authorities are investigating the possibility that there is a connection between the latest incident and Sunday’s attack. Thus far, no organization has claimed responsibility, though terror group Hamas praised the attack and pledged, “We are preparing surprises for the enemy until the ground trembles.”
In the wake of the recent attacks, the Palestinian Authority has reportedly signaled to the Israeli government that it is not interested in further escalation and intends to cooperate with security forces.
