Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon pushed back on media reports on Wednesday that he had resigned his post and was returning home to compete in the Likud primaries ahead of the April 9 Knesset general election.
“On behalf of Ambassador Danon, the recent reports of his resignation are incorrect,” the Israeli UN Mission said in a statement. “After a decision is reached in the Knesset, he will announce his intentions.”
The statement appeared to be referring to a final Knesset vote to disperse, which was held later on Wednesday.
Danon was appointed ambassador in 2015 following a brief stint as Israel’s science, technology and space minister. He had previously served as deputy minister of defense, before a dispute with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014 led to his firing.
The 47-year-old Danon was first elected to the Knesset, as a Likud member, in 2009.
