The European Union’s blacklisting on Tuesday of a unit of the Iranian Intelligence Ministry and two of its staff over terror allegations was welcomed by America’s top diplomat.

The move by the EU followed concerns raised by Denmark, France and the Netherlands over Iranian plots on the continent.

Iran and its Lebanon-based Shi’a proxy Hezbollah “have terrorized Europe since 1979,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted on Tuesday. “By taking action today, European nations sent Iran a clear message that terrorism will not be tolerated.”

“The US strongly supports the new sanctions and stands with our European allies as we counter this common threat,” he added.

David Ibsen — president of the United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) advocacy group – stated, “Appeasing the regime in Tehran will only allow it to continue to target opponents abroad with impunity. Strongly sanctioning this behavior is the only way to bring Iran into line. We urge EU leaders to ensure these sanctions mark the beginning of a new, more robust approach to dealing with Iran.”
