The disappearance of Guma Aguiar, who became a multi-millionaire following the $2.5 billion sale of an energy company he owned, has led to a ferocious legal battle between his mother and his wife over the $100 million in assets in Aguiar’s name. However, two rabbis which Aguiar appointed as part of a group of advisors, have helped mediate the dispute between wife Jamie and mother Ellen.
“Without putting out one shred of evidence, what my client wanted happened serendipitously,” Richard Barron told ABCNews.com following a decision that was agreed upon by Jamie and Ellen, which granted Aguiar’s $50 million in U.S. assets to the wealth management company Northern Trust.
“Hell hath no fury like a mother and daughter-in-law scorned turned into the court really bringing the parties together,” Baron said.
In an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 News, Ellen Aguiar said that her son – who was suffering from psychological problems before his boat washed ashore in Florida last week without him aboard – just wanted to be loved.
Referring to Aguiar’s wife, Jamie, Ellen said, “she filed for divorce and I know it saddened him greatly. He just needed the support and wanted to feel loved”.
A power of attorney document provided by Ellen Aguiar in Florida filing notes that in July of 2011, Guma made his intentions clear in regards to who would control his assets in the event of a tragedy.
“Specifically, I revoke all powers of attorney that I have given to my wife, Jamie Aguiar aka Jamie Black Aguiar, to act in any way on by behalf. I further OBJECT [emphasis his] to the appointment of my wife Jamie Black Aguiar, aka Jamie Aguiar, to serve in any capacity as guardian of my person and/or property, or to have authority to act on my behalf,” the document reads. “At the present time my wife and I are in conflict and her interests are adverse to my interests.”
A legal filing by Jamie Aguiar’s attorney argues that Guma’s mother has a history of disrupting “the home life of Jamie, Guma, and their children”.
“The evidence will show that the Counter-Petition was the only way for Jamie Aguiar to protect the interests of herself and her children from what is sadly the latest in a long line of Ellen Aguiar’s pervasive, persistent, and ill-advised attempts to disrupt the home life of Jamie, Guma, and their children and seize control of their finances,” wrote William Scherer, Jamie’s attorney.
