A bus carrying tourists from Israel exploded at the Burgus Airport in Bulgaria today, with the death toll reaching as high as 7.

According to a January article in Haaretz, the Transportation Ministry of Israel warned of a forthcoming attack against Israelis in Bulgaria.

“I asked to formally tighten security (in Bulgaria) because I am worried about a security-related incident,” said Danny Shenar, chief of security at the Transportation Ministry. Shenar reportedly asked European security services “to tighten security around groups of Israelis in various resorts like ski resorts and hotels.”

The head of Israel’s Counterterrorism Bureau, however, was not convinced at the time that there was enough credible information to believe there would be a terrorist attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

According to a Bulgarian news agency, the majority of the bus’ forty passengers in the suicide bombing on Wednesday were teenagers.  Seven people have reportedly been killed in the attack and at least twenty are injured. The explosion occurred on the 18th anniversary of the fatal bombing by terrorists against a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in which 85 people were murdered.

Before the attack occurred on Wednesday, it was announced that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was expected to release a statement tonight, according to Yediot Acharonot. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has another suspicion of the culprit of today’s attack: Iran.
