The Israeli Defense Forces have released footage of an incident that took place last week in which a female soldier fatally shot a 17 year old Arab assailant who pointed a gun at her colleague. The gun was later discovered to be fake.
The video shows the suspect attack IDF officers, throwing punches and grappling with an officer. In a Facebook post, IDF spokesperson Captain Barak Raz provided more details, along with a picture of the weapon (left):
“Last week, Wednesday night, a Palestinian male attacked a Border Police Officer at a post in Hebron, pressing this “gun” to his throat,” wrote Raz, “The police officer struggled free as another police officer neutralized the threat.”
Last week The Algemeiner reported that the female officer who shot the teenager received death threats online and that the incident was blamed for Arab violence and rioting in the West Bank.
The Algemeiner also reported that the officer expressed no regrets upon subsequently learning that the pistol was a fake. “It didn’t change it for me, because in those same moments you don’t have time to think or be confused. For me it was a real pistol in every sense of the word pointed at my soldier and it’s my responsibility to act, because if I don’t kill him my friend will be killed, and I won’t let this happen,” the officer told several media outlets.
“Rumors are running wild about what happened that night,” Raz added, “Indeed, it turned out to be a toy gun – but ask yourselves how you would react if this was pressed against your partner. Watch the security tape – judge for yourselves.”
