Jewish recording artist Shyne, best known for his 2000 self-titled album that sold over a million copies, launched a Twitter tirade against President Obama over the past two days. “If @barackobama doesn’t do something about the genocide in Chicago fast,” he wrote on Monday, “I’m gonna have an @kanyewest melt down & say Barack Don’t care about?” Shyne was likely referring to rapper Kanye West’s remarks during a Hurricane Katrina relief broadcast, accusing George W. Bush of not caring about black people.
“@barackobama I forgot you weren’t an impoverished inner city kid! You grew up in Kansas & Hawaii! You only play the ghetto card come election time!” he added. Yesterday, among other statements, he wrote “I would call any president to task for not helping. But I find it disgusting that we have a president who could’ve been one of the bodies but he doesn’t help.”
Shyne converted to Judaism in 2006 while in prison. “As an African in America who’s pretty famous in African-American culture, you would think I would be drawn to Islam, or maybe Christianity,” he told HipHopDX. “But I couldn’t convert to something I’m not. Islam just didn’t make sense to me. I come from the ultimate truth […] European Jews are not the only Jews […] It’s not about how much Torah I know and what rabbi I’m following, it’s about what I’m doing with the information.”
Shyne recently collaborated with Jewish recording artist Matisyahu on a track entitled “Buffalo Soldiers.”
