Over 40 percent of undergraduates are Jewish at Brandeis University, a private research university with Jewish roots. The school does not hold classes on major Jewish holidays, and its Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies is one of the largest of its kind outside Israel. While the school does host a chapter of SJP, a significantly higher number of students engage with the campus Chabad and Hillel, the latter of which supports some 20 religious, cultural, educational, Israel-centric, and community service groups. Chabad offers Shabbat meals, Jewish learning opportunities, and personal support and guidance to Jewish students. On Shabbat, students can attend Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox services.
