Jewish Population on Campus
Vassar College's Hillel and Chabad offer weekly Shabbat services and dinners, as well as social and cultural programming for Jewish students. However, the school also hosts active SJP and JVP contingents, which lobbied their student government to pass a BDS resolution in 2016. “The debate over the BDS movement led to rampant anti-Semitism that the Vassar Student Association failed to adequately address, in which Jewish students felt unsafe being on campus,” one student recalled in September. The resolution was subsequently rejected in a student-wide referendum, weeks after one Vassar professor also warned that the campus conversation surrounding BDS was “random, facetious and, yes, antisemitic.” Although the school saw over 20 antisemitic incidents that same year, significantly fewer were recorded in 2017, contributing to a slight improvement in Vassar’s rating.
