The Top 100 People Positively Influencing Jewish Life, 2019

Donald Trump

President of the United States

The 45th president of the United States has variously been the source of joy, pride, anxiety, and condemnation across the American Jewish community during the past year. After withdrawing from the flawed nuclear deal with Iran and moving, in accordance with American law, the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, President Donald Trump has more recently been talking about a mutual defense pact with the Jewish state. Despite the unprecedented warmth in relations with Israel, Trump’s relationship with many among the Jewish community in his own country has at times been much more fraught, and never more so than in August 2019, when he asserted that US Jews who vote for the Democratic Party do so “either [because of] a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.” Don’t expect that relationship to be any calmer as Trump campaigns for a second term in office in 2020.
