Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok made history in October 2020 when he signed a peace agreement with Israel, making him the leader of the third Arab country to announce diplomatic relations with Israel in the space of two months. Israel and Sudan have already begun economic and trade relations with a principal focus on agricultural technology. In a statement announcing the agreement, Hamdok joined US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in pledging an era of “new opportunities for the people of Sudan, Israel, the Middle East, and Africa.” Domestically, Hamdok is pursuing a progressive domestic agenda, with an emphasis on boosting the rights of women. As well as appointing four women to his cabinet, Hamdok has also repealed laws that restricted the freedom of women to work, study and dress as they choose.
