Several anti-Israel groups aggressively protested at Edinburgh University in Scotland against Israel ambassador to the UK, Daniel Taub, yesterday. Mr Taub was invited to speak by the Edinburgh University Politics and International Relations society.
A talk by the Ambassador was “disrupted by chanting students waving Palestinian flags,” according to the Jewish Chronicle.
“University security and the ambassador’s own protection unit brought the event under control but Mr Taub was unable to have a scheduled private meeting with Jewish students,” writes the British Jewish newspaper.
An Israeli embassy spokesperson said: “The vast majority of the students in the hall expressed their interest in hearing the ambassador and gathered on one side of the room to hear him speak and ask questions.”
This is the second Israel related incident to take place this month at this university. A few weeks ago the Edinburgh University Students Association carried out a referendum on whether to boycott G4S, a Danish-British security firm, that operates in Israel. There were 538 votes in favor and 410 votes against the motion. However, the motion did not pass because it failed to get the necessary 1500 votes.
