Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman will unite two of the countries largest political parties, ‘Likud’ and ‘Israel our Home,’ to create a nationalist mega-faction The Algemeiner has learned.
“They will run as a joint list with Netanyahu first and Lieberman second. They expect to get close to 60 seats,” said a diplomatic source with knowledge of the matter.
“Right now in the Knesset they have 42 seats combined, they believe they will cross the threshold of 50 if they run together. It will be the biggest party in the Knesset and unite the forces of the national camp,” the source added.
Also reporting on the political development, Israel’s Channel 2 writes that the list will be named “Likud our Home” combining the respective names of the parties.
Not all is finalized however, “It still hasn’t been approved by the central committee of Likud,” said the source, and news of the merger has been met with denials from the parties.
Channel 2 anchor Oded Ben Ami said of the move, “Lieberman and Netanyahu have common positions that seek the good of the general public.”
“There was a troublesome relationship between Netanyahu and Lieberman in the past, but now their interests have united them,” our source concluded.
A press conference will take place at 8pm Israeli time, according to Israeli sources.
