Chuck Hagel, Obama's nominee for Secretary of Defense.

New York Daily News – A moderate Republican senator once thought to be a possible backer of Chuck Hagel‘s nomination to be secretary of defense said she’ll oppose his confirmation, while other GOP senators signaled they may delay a floor vote on the nomination unless the White House provides more information about the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Wednesday that Hagel’s views on the most critical threats facing the United States are “unsettling.” In a four-page statement, Collins said Hagel was unwilling to ask the European Union to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization in 2006, and he has been hesitant to back the use of all non-military options, such as unilateral sanctions, to pressure Iran into ceasing its nuclear program.

It is only necessary to watch Nasrallah lead a chant “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” in a YouTube video sponsored by MEMRI to understand what recognizing Hezbollah really represents. The fact that Mr. Hagel did not want to bother the EU to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization is terribly disconcerting. Those fifty-some US senators who still plan to vote affirmatively for Chuck Hagel as US Secretary of Defense really need to look themselves in the mirror and ask whether they are pusillanimous lackeys to their political party leaders and benefactors hoping and praying to be re-elected when their term of office is up for re-election or they are critical, independent thinkers who represent their citizenry with probity as well as morality in their voice. A visit to Antarctica can be a fascinating wake-up call for those who wish to observe the cute penguin in its natural habitat. While the penguin seems to love the social activity of following the leader, one need only breathe in the stench of its habitat for just a few moments to arrive at the conclusion that just like every other creature walking the land or glacier in this world, its environment will stink ad nauseum if it does not take the time and effort to clean it up. Senators, vote responsibly according to what you know is best for your constituents and the American people. This vote is of great importance. Please do not capitulate to a penguin mentality.
