Jewish human rights group, the Anti-Defamation League, said that social media giant Facebook’s assertion that a page entitled “Jewish Ritual Murder” doesn’t violate their Community Standards is an “unacceptable excuse,” in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The ADL’s comments, also calling for the page to be “removed immediately,” came a day after Facebook celebrated its 10th anniversary.

“The ‘Jewish Ritual Murder’ page on Facebook perpetuates age-old anti-Semitic propaganda, and it should be removed immediately. It is profoundly offensive, has no socially redeeming value, and adds nothing to any legitimate marketplace of ideas,” Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, said. “This page targets all Jews, and Facebook’s position that it technically does not violate their Community Standards because it does not target individuals is an unacceptable excuse.  We do not believe that Facebook intends to send a message that they are insensitive to the enormous harm the blood libel has caused throughout Jewish history, and the easiest way for them to make that clear would be to exercise the discretion they certainly have to remove the page.”

The ADL’s comments came a day after Algemeiner blogger Dexter Van Zile drew attention to the page in an article entitled ‘Why is Facebook Enabling Anti-Semites.’

“Will the page eventually be removed? Probably. But why doesn’t Facebook delete this stuff when first apprised of its presence on their website?” Van Zile asked. “Why should it take any more than one complaint for Facebook to do the right thing?”

This instance is by no means the first time Facebook has been accused of allowing anti-Semitism to flourish on its pages. In September, another Algemeiner blogger, David Fischler, said he was “flabbergasted” when he reported a page which portrayed “all of the anti-Semitic greatest hits,” and was similarly told that Facebook’s Community Standards were not violated.

On its Community Standards page, under the header “Hate Speech”, the online giant claims that, “Facebook does not permit hate speech, but distinguishes between serious and humorous speech. While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.”

The “Jewish Ritual Murder” page itself does not appear to have been updated since April, 2012, but is replete with absurd claims of Jewish brutality.

“Ritual Murder of Children by Jews in Russia Reported by Russian Paper,” reads the headline of one post. “The Catholic church has even had dozens of child saints, prior to Vatican II, in honor of the many children who have died at the hands of sadistic, Gentile-hating, ritually murderous Jews,” claims another.
