An “anti-Zionism” course at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) was suspended on Tuesday, following intense backlash over its biased nature, The Algemeiner has learned.

The course in question — “Palestine: A Settler Colonial Analysis” — was decried by a campus watchdog group as “a classic example of antisemitic anti-Zionism,” which contributes to greater hostility toward Jewish and pro-Israel students on campus.

On Tuesday, some two weeks after The Algemeiner exposed the contents of the slated course, UC Berkeley Assistant Vice Chancellor Dan Mogulof, from the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, informed The Algemeiner:

It has been determined that the facilitator for the course in question did not comply with policies and procedures that govern the normal academic review and approval of proposed courses for the Decal program.

As a result, the proposed course did not receive a sufficient degree of scrutiny to ensure that the syllabus met Berkeley’s academic standards before it was opened for enrollment to students. For that reason, approval for the course has been suspended pending completion of the mandated review and approval process.

It should also be noted that the Executive Dean of the College of Letters and Science is very concerned about the offering of any course, even a student-run course, which espouses a single political viewpoint and/or appears to offer a forum for political organizing rather than an opportunity for the kind of open academic inquiry that Berkeley is known for.

The decision to cancel the course coincided with the publication of an open letter to UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirk, signed by a coalition of 43 Jewish, civil rights and education advocacy organizations — led by campus watchdog the AMCHA Initiative — expressing concern over the school’s vetting process.

“A review of the syllabus of ‘Palestine: A Settler Colonial Analysis’ reveals that the course’s objectives, reading materials and guest speakers are politically motivated, meet our government’s criteria for antisemitism, and are intended to indoctrinate students to hate the Jewish state and take action to eliminate it,” the letter stated.

The class was originally offered as a “DeCal” course, part of a student-run program that falls under the jurisdiction of UC Berkeley’s Academic Senate. Aside from being assigned texts by anti-Zionist and antisemitic authors, students were going to be required to attend at least one anti-Israel event during the semester.

The faculty sponsor of the course, Dr. Hatem Bazian, is a co-founder of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and a major supporter of the US Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI). Bazian is a former fundraising speaker for the anti-Israel organization KindHearts, which was shut down by the US government in 2006 for its alleged ties to Hamas.

The course facilitator, Paul Hadweh, is a Palestinian student instructor from Bethlehem and is an active member of UC Berkeley’s SJP chapter, which, among other things, calls for an end to the “Israeli system of apartheid and discrimination” and “Israeli military occupation of the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.”

In November 2015, Hadweh helped organize an event featuring anti-Zionist poet Remi Kanazi, a supporter of USACBI. In a 2012 Facebook post, Kanazi wrote, “Dear Zionists: You have never ‘defended yourselves.’ You came in, stole land that wasn’t yours & maintained a racist state through massacres and brute force.”

In his promotion of the course on Facebook, Hadweh wrote that he would be taking students on an “in-depth” exploration of “the history and present of Zionist settler colonialism in Palestine.” The post was accompanied by an image featuring infamous anti-Israel maps whose creators have been accused of distorting history.

  • Part of the problem is that pro-Jewish, pro-peace, pro-Israel voices tend to talk mainly to each other and not to the wider community. Please go out and post pro-Israel opinions on web-sites run by local newspaper and TV stations, liberal and conservative web sites, and any other place you can think of. Believe me, by and large the anti-Israel folks do that more often and it helps them create a climate of anti-Israel feeling.

    • Ronald

      You are absolutely correct.

  • HaroldT

Time to end the occupation of the west bank and Gaza by sending the Muslims back to Egypt, Syria, Iran and Iraq.

  • Yale

Berkeley should now lay out the lies and disinformation that got the course banned for “not meeting the standards” of a Berkeley education. By labeling these lies for what they are, the University may inoculate its students against these claims if they encounter them form another sources (or SJP on campus outside of the classroom).

    • Jeff

The problem is the university itself. They don’t call UC Berkley “Bezerkly” for nothing.

    • Ronald

You think the course was banned based on lies about the course?

  • Geri Moskowitz

I am shocked that this course even reached the point it did before being cancelled. Would Berklely have entertained a course teaching students that there was never a “country” called Palestine nor a people called Palestinian prior to 1967. No, they would have been bombarded with protest.

    • Ronald

If you are shocked by this you have a great deal to learn about the UC system of discrimination against Jews and others, their buckling under to student groups making threatening “demands” and their tolerance for anti-Semitic behavior all over the campus.

    • C J Collins

There NEVER has been a state or country called Palestine in human history. There was an area called Palestina by the Romans (Translation:- The land of the Phillistines) and the mandate of Palestine imposed by the British. But neither of these were either a state or country.

The land currently claimed by the so-called Palestinians (West Bank & Gaza (which they didn’t want when Israel was created in 1948)) is actually inside the borders of Israel at it’s creation in 1948. It was occupied by Jordan until the war of 1967 when it was returned.

What an easy catch are the students of Young age, full of ideals and naif points of view, when they are still fresh in college.

If some of those “new” ideas match what they have learned at home, that´s OK and if they don´t, it´s much better because they also want to differenciate themselves from their parents.

How easy is to throw stones to the Jew. It has always be and if talk about a strong Israeli soldier, it is much better.

Israel if of course guilty of every possible accusation. If they have complained about racism, they should be accused of that, if they have complained about genicide, they have to be also accused of that.

Why so universal universities don´t dare to discuss about problems in West Sahara, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Sudan, Yemen, Iran, Siria, yes Siria again, and a hundred more places where true human rights are completelly absent?

    Why is it always Israel?
Where would it be anything called Palestine or “The Palestinean people” if Jews where not there? Would Western Jordanians fight for their rights if they had to fight against an arab government?

    • Ronald

      “Why is it always Israel?”

Because that is the basis of the the Islamist religious belief. And because the Jewish community has been too lazy to do the research and spread their findings to the larger world. How many do you know who have even bothered to read the Hamas Charter or the PA’s charter, both of which call for the destruction of Israel, and not for any other “solution”.

You see it here going back to the 7th Century when Islamic armies took over the land known now as Iraq and Syria:

      Strategies and Methods
Strategies of the Islamic Resistance Movement: Palestine Is Islamic aqf:
      Article Eleven:
The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that. Palestine is an Islamic Waqf land consecrated for Moslem generations until Judgement Day. This being so, who could claim to have the right to represent Moslem generations till Judgement Day?
This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Moslems have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Moslems consecrated these lands to Moslem generations till the Day of Judgement.
It happened like this: When the leaders of the Islamic armies conquered Syria and Iraq, they sent to the Caliph of the Moslems, Umar bin-el-Khatab, asking for his advice concerning the conquered land – whether they should divide it among the soldiers, or leave it for its owners, or what? After consultations and discussions between the Caliph of the Moslems, Omar bin-el-Khatab and companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, it was decided that the land should be left with its owners who could benefit by its fruit. As for the real ownership of the land and the land itself, it should be consecrated for Moslem generations till Judgement Day. Those who are on the land, are there only to benefit from its fruit. This Waqf remains as long as earth and heaven remain. Any procedure in contradiction to Islamic Sharia, where Palestine is concerned, is null and void.
“Verily, this is a certain truth. Wherefore praise the name of thy Lord, the great Allah.” (The Inevitable – verse 95).

Now UC Berkeley can again concentrate on American values courses. like Lying, Cheating, Protest, Civil Disobedience

  • Nelson marans

  • Andrew

    Good job, Algemeiner!

  • Rachel Lerner

    Good job!

One more example of disinformation and intentioned lies disqualifying Israel´s right to exist and inciting hatred under the false pretense of presenting an “academic” program.

It is good to know that in this case truth has prevailed!

  • We must always monitor our surroundings. B”H, vigilance paid off!

  • Sherlock Holmes

In the 1960’s when I was a student at a top East Coast university we thought of UC Berkeley as an academic mental asylum. Some things change very slowly. The entire UC is strangely unAmerican. Don’t they know that post-Madrid the PA was given control over the seven major Pal cities on the West Bank? Don’t they recall that Ariel Sharon moved thousands of Jews out of Gaza — even digging up the dead — so the PA could begin stage 1 of a Pal state, only to have Hamas elected, who then turned the nascent PA state into a nest of terrorists attacking Israel?

    • Ronald

“we thought of UC Berkeley as an academic mental asylum”

      Back in the 60’s.

Have you revisited what is going on today at your alma mater, that top east coast university? Dollars to donuts the craziness from Berkeley has spread there too, and you will find evidence of a campus-wide revolution taking place whose goal is to overturn the American system as we have known it.

  • No doubt the organizers of the “course” will be undeterred and attempt to run it at other universities. I am sure they would have had far more success in the UK, especially at places like Kings College and Exeter University. In the UK, the university authorities are so gutless they would have allowed the course to run – or maybe even sympathised with it.

  • This is a disgrace. How can the idiots that run Berkeley ban a very good hate generation programme against Jews and Israel? Obama is going to be furious. Killing Jews, antisemitism and Islam hatred should be a special degree from Berkeley. Get you Bsc.hate and terrorism degree at Berkeley. Honors should include bomb making and knife skills.

    • Ronald

It is a special degree, the hate and terrorism skills are widely available there and honors do include bomb making and knife skills there.

    • this is a stupid post. Insulting the President who has done more than the previous President’s to help Israel. I.e. 38 billion in aid!

  • Good start
Now get rid of that anti-semite Hatem Bazian
He has no place in any univrsity, specially a public tax supported one

  • good start
now get rid of that anti-semite teacher Hatem Bazian

  • G Pickholz

Disappointed in your missing the back story, as it is important. Dean of Career Services got involved when various firms suspended recruitment of Berkeley students due to the course. BDS can be fought, and quite effectively. Therein lies the main story.

    • Gary Zimmerman

      VERY good point.

  • Kahane Wasright

That Bazian and Hadweh walk about unmolested is a testament to both the tolerance and foolishness of the Jews in Southern California.

    • Alan Ehrlich

I agree with your point but not your geography. Berkeley is in Northern California

At last, someone has seen the light!!
The anti Jewish and anti Israel lies being voiced on American campuses has been exposed.

    • Ronald

Don’t be too optimistic. They are only “studying” the issue.

  • Perhaps if some digs deep enough, Soros $ will appear.

  • The people in charge for these courses MUST be punished and even expelled for promoting RACISM!

    • Ronald

Don’t be ridiculous. Racism is only allowed to be charged by Muslims and Democrats.

  • Lia

I have no words to tell you how much I admire Israel. Am Yisroel Chai!(I am not an Israeli, am not Jewish, do not live in Israel, have never visited Israel. I am a committed Evangelical Christian who knows that we have, from the Jews, the patriarchs and the prophets, the Psalms and the songs, the faith in God and I am grateful for all of it.)

  • They should make that map for the US
