Park East Synagogue Rabbi and Appeal of Conscience Foundation founder, Arthur Schneier was awarded French’s highest honor last week in a ceremony at the French consulate on 5th avenue.
The Legion of Honor was bestowed upon Rabbi Schneier at the behest of President Sarkozy, in recognition of his efforts to promote world peace and interfaith dialogue.
The Rabbi thanked the French officials and President Nicolas Sarkozy whom he described a s a personal friend, he also spoke of the close bond between France and the United States that was “sealed in blood on Normandy beach.”
Presided over by Ambassador François Delattre and Consul General Phillipe Lalliot, the event was attended by local and French dignitaries including New York’s Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Art dealer Guy Wildenstein, artist Yaakov Agam and socialite Patricia Duff.
Also present where senior members of the Rabbis’ community whom he thanked for their ongoing support.
