Comic book lore is riddled with famous Jews, from the creators of Superman to the original Green Lantern cartoonist.
Joshua Stulman, of Brooklyn, is now launching his comic character, “Magen”, who “is proud to be Jewish”, according to Stulman.
“It’s a retrospective of the ‘Shalom’ comic,” Simcha Weinstein told The Algemeiner. Weinstein authored a book entitled “Up, Up, and Oy Vey: How Jewish History, Culture, and Values Shaped The Comic Book Superhero”, and helped get Magen off the ground.
Unlike other comics, where “a lot of the Jewishness is very masked”, according to Weinstein, Stulman’s new character won’t shy away from his background in the series entitled “Israeli Defense Comics”. Weinstein said that comics have always had certain Jewish values and culture but many of the famous Jews involved in the creation of these stories assimilated and changed their names, giving the fictional characters and the creators of those characters alternate personalities.
“You have these young creators in a story telling tradition rich in biblical stories,” he said.
In the comic’s first issue, Magen saves a kidnapped soldier from terrorists. Asked about the complexity of Middle Eastern politics, Stulman told a Brooklyn based news site,”I don’t really have an answer.
“I just want to present the issues in a comic book format.”
