Puerto Rican Boxing Star Miguel Cotto who narrowly lost in a unanimous decision last night to undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather has an Orthodox Union kosher symbol tattooed on his right shoulder.
Typically, the sign, which features the letter ‘u’ placed inside a circle is found on food product packaging to indicate that an item is kosher, but according to boxing commentator Elie Seckbach, the athlete says that he got the tattoo as a tribute to a Jewish friend.
Cotto is well known in the Jewish community as the opponent who defeated Israeli boxing champion Yuri Foreman on June 5th 2010 in Yankee Stadium. After two successful defenses, the WBA Super Welterweight title won by Cotto in his defeat of Foreman was taken in last night’s fight by Floyd Mayweather.
