David Miliband, the former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the UK government, was caught riding the New York City subway like a regular chap recently.
The UK’s Daily Mail published the below video of Miliband looking every bit the private citizen as he sat rather somnolently on his commute. Miliband is living in New York after having taken a job as the head of the International Rescue Committee.
The son of Marxist historian Ralph Milliband, he has described being the child of Jewish immigrants as “a very important part of [his] identity.”
Milliband and his brother, British opposition leader Ed Milliband, have had tense relations with the Jewish community at times, although Ed Milliband recently defined himself as a “Zionist.” In 2010, Ed narrowly defeated David for leadership of the Labour party.
As head of the IRC, Milliband will be responsible for over 12,000 staff in 40 countries around the world. In his resignation letter, he said that the IRC “represents the best of humanitarian ideals…it was founded at the suggestion of Albert Einstein in the 1930s for those fleeing the Nazis, so given my own family history there is an additional personal motivation for me”.
Before leaving the UK, Milliband also resigned as Vice Chairman of the Sunderland soccer team, after they hired self described “fascist” Paolo Di Canio as manager.
