Four Egyptian security checkpoints close to the country’s border with Israel and Gaza were attacked by gunmen Sunday, Reuters reported.

Men in pickup trucks exchanged gunfire with soldiers and police in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid in the early hours of the morning, but there were no casualties, security sources said.

The incident is part of an upsurge in violence in the region since Wednesday’s overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi.

On Friday, five security officers were killed in encounters with suspected militants in El Arish, the regional capital.

On Saturday, a priest was also killed there by a group of militants, four other checkpoints were fired upon and an explosion hit an Egyptian pipeline supplying gas to Jordan, Reuters reported.
