An official at the United States embassy in Israel has said that Sunday’s closure of the facility by the State Department is “much ado about nothing,” according to Israel’s Channel 2.

Due to what it said was an imminent security threat, the United States shut down 22 of its embassies and consulates in the Muslim world and Israel for the day Sunday and issued a global travel warning to its citizens.

The closure was seen as a precaution against unspecified al-Qaeda threats in the region.

“The Department has been apprised of information that, out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, indicates we should institute these precautionary steps. It is possible we may have additional days of closings as well, depending on our analysis,” said the embassy in Israel in a statement Friday.

Other American institutions in the country, such as The American Center in Jerusalem and another consular center in the city will continue to operate as usual.
