JNS.org – As global attention remains focused on the conflict between Israel and Hamas, it is worth noting that Israel is not the only nation being targeted by terrorist groups with rockets in the region.
While Israel’s Iron Dome system intercepts many rockets launched by Hamas from Gaza, thereby preventing Israeli fatalities, Egypt’s Interior Ministry is reporting that eight Egyptians, including one security officer, have been killed near the border with Israel from rockets launched by Islamist forces in the Sinai Peninsula.
Twenty-five others were also injured in an explosion resulting from one of the rockets, reported Reuters.
The attack took place in the city of El-Arish in the northern Sinai region. Egypt has been struggling to curb the rise of extreme Islamist groups in Sinai since the ousting of former President Mohamed Morsi, who was connected to some of these fundamentalist groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood.
Egypt’s recently elected president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has promised to curb this violence. Meanwhile the Egyptian military on Sunday thwarted an attempt to launch two rockets from the Sinai Peninsula at Israel, reported Al-Arabiya.
