Israel’s Prison Service has moved convicted Fatah terrorist, Marwan Barghouti, into solitary confinement for seven days, after he wrote a public letter calling for armed attacks against Jews and Israelis, Israel’s Ch.2 News said Wednesday.

The 55-year-old Barghouti, in a letter released on the 10th anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader and arch terrorist, Yasser Arafat, called for a “third intifada,”  and vowed that “choosing global and armed resistance” would be “faithful to Arafat’s legacy, to his ideas and his principles for which tens of thousands died as martyrs.”

Barghouti wrote that, “It is imperative to reconsider our choice of resistance as a way of defeating the occupier,” and called for ending security cooperation between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israeli counterparts.

The court also fined Barghouti 300 shekels for incitement, violence and providing an interview without permission.

Barghouti, who led Fatah’s Tanzim military wing, is serving five life terms for planning and taking part in numerous lethal attacks against civilians and soldiers, largely in the so-called “second intifada,” which lasted roughly from 2000 to 2005.

In the letter, he also called on the Palestinians to “strengthen the resistance,” a common code word for carrying out violent attacks against Israelis, claiming terrorism was “the only way to remove the occupation, achieving freedom and the return of refugees and independence.”

In his message to the current PA leadership, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, he said he supported Abbas and his attempts to condemn and malign Israel in international organizations and fora, and called for tightening boycotts of Israeli products.

Israeli forces arrested Barghouti on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day in 2002, and, in 2004, a military court sentenced him to five life sentences plus 40 years in prison for his role in terror activities.

While some have bandied Barghouti’ as a possible successor to Abbas, who is soon to enter his tenth year of a four year term, Israeli officials have responded that he will end his life in prison.

According to the Foreign Ministry, “Marwan Barghouti served as Secretary-General of Fatah in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, a member of the Palestinian legislature, head of the Tanzim, and the founder of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades which has carried out a large number of deadly terrorist attacks killing scores of Israelis and wounding hundreds.

“In the framework of his activities, he has received large amounts of funds from different sources both inside and outside Israel. Among these sources is the Palestinian Authority. The specific allocations of these funds were authorized by the actual signature of Yassser Arafat. These funds were used by Marwan Barghouti to finance many activities carried out by terror cells in the West Bank.

“Following are some of the more heinous terror attacks for which Marwan Barghouti is responsible:

• Jun 12, 2001 – The murder of a Greek Orthodox monk on the road to Ma’ale Adumim.
• Jan 17, 2002 – The shooting attack during a bat mitzva celebration at a banquet hall in Hadera. Six Israelis were killed in this attack, 26 were injured.
• Jan 22, 2002 – The shooting spree on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem. Two Israelis were killed, 37 wounded.
• Feb 25, 2002 – The shooting attack in the Jerusalem residential neighborhood of Neve Ya’acov. One Israeli policewoman was killed, 9 Israelis were wounded.
• Feb 27, 2002 – The murder of an Israeli at a coffee factory in the Atarot industrial zone of Jerusalem.
• Feb 27, 2002 – The suicide attack perpetrated by Daryan Abu Aysha at the Maccabim checkpoint in which two policeman were injured.
• Mar 5, 2002 – The shooting spree at the Tel Aviv Seafood restaurant. Three Israelis were killed, 31 wounded.
• Mar 8, 2002 – A suicide terrorist was killed in Daheat el Barid as he was on his way to carry out an attack in Jerusalem.
• Mar 27, 2002 – The interception of an ambulance and the confiscation of an explosive belt which was being smuggled from Samaria into Barghouti’s terrorist infrastructure in Ramallah.

“Marwan Barghouti was also directly responsible for operating the terrorist cell of Raed Karmi in Tulkaram which carried out a series of deadly terrorist attacks,” according to the ministry.

In response to the letter, terror victims group, Almagor, called on Barghouti “to be isolated from any contact with outside visits and any contact with other prisoners, so that he is blocked from issuing inciting letters from prison,” according to Israel National News.
