Politico – Jeb Bush distanced himself Tuesday from James Baker, who is advising him on foreign policy, after the former secretary of state directed criticism at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a testament to the potency of the topic in Republican politics, the former Florida governor’s campaign said that Baker — a close family friend over five decades — is merely one of “a wide range of advisers on foreign policy.”

    Mr. Bush,

    That is not an acceptable response.

    If you wish to distance yourself from the legacy of your father and brother, you need a team with opinions formed out of the critical urgency of the present, not formed in the past when with deep biases.

    Mr. Baker’s comments on Israel, which in my view were contemptible, now are yours. He is your advisor.

    Your saying one thing in public while your team is out there disparaging the head of Israel, is not acceptable. In fact it lacks character.

    Stand up for what you believe in and form a team that represents those views, not your father’s old cronies who are intractable in their antiquated positions that are supposedly antithetical to what you say are your views.

    You can’t have it both ways. Not this time.
