Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday said Israel is blocking peace by continuing to expand settlements on occupied territory, but reaffirmed his support for a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 border.

“What prevents the achievement of this desire is Israel’s continuation of its occupation and settlement activity and imposing realities on the ground,” said Abbas, speaking at a regional World Economic Forum conference in Jordan.

Settlement construction is only an issue because Abbas wants to expel any and all Israelis from his future state. Had he and his predecesor taken their commitment under Oslo seriously, there would be established borders by now and people getting on with their lives. In Jenin, once a hotbed of terrorism, the Palestinians are working with Israeli assistance to build a good economy. But a healthy Palestinian economy doesn’t favour war, so Abbas urges against “normalization”.

Ho hum. He knows perfectly well what the indispensable conditions are for a 2-state settlement and he will never agree to them. They include recognition of Israel as a Jewish state; abandonment of the claim (not right) of return; recognition that Israel is never, ever going back to the pre-1957 indefensible borders and an Israeli military outpost in the Jordan valley to guard against sneak attack.
He knows perfectly well were he to agree with these indispensable Israeli conditions, he would soon meet the same fatal fate of King Abdullah I of Jordan and President al-Sadat of Egypt. It’s just more propaganda to delude westerners that the Palestinians desire peace..they don’t, never have and probably never will. Thus it is and we should all say so.

It’s one thing for a news article to include a direct quote of Abbas using his terms, as in paragraph 2 of this article. It’s imbalanced for a news article’s lede sentence to bestow objectivity on loaded terms by its own use of “settlements on occupied territory” and “pre-1967 border.” They aren’t “settlements,” it’s not “occupied,” and the very document defining the 1949 ceasefire line expressly defined it as a military ceasefire line only [made obsolete by renewed fighting in 1967 and its ceasefire line] and not an international border.

Both the US and Israel define “two states” as two states for two peoples. Contrary to what the lede says, Abbas did not “reaffirm” P.A. support for a two-state solution. The P.A. has repeatedly rejected two states for two peoples.

    Abbas lies again!
If he really wanted a negotiated two state deal, it wouldn’t matter what Israel did. The “agreement” would then set all the parameters of the “two state delusion”.

Abbas is starting to hear the drumbeat of annexation and he’s getting nervous (my opinion).

What he really wants is an Islamic base of operations to continue the longest Jihad of the last 100 years.

Can Abbas possibly be so incredibly stupid?

He is the peace impediment who time after time walked away from the peace table.
He is the idiot who wants all matters settled before discussions begin.
He is the liar who pretends to be president but whose tenure ended years ago.
He is the loud mouth who still after numerous defeats continues to threaten Israel.
He is the thief who has stolen millions of welfare dollars from his “subjects”.
He is the inciter of constant violence against Israel.

He, despite his obdurate stupidity is in no danger of being removed from his seat of power because his subjects are more stupid than he is.

    Or are they all masochists?
