A mysterious ball of light which reportedly appeared at 4 a.m. at a synagogue in Ukraine was the result of a rare but natural phenomenon, according to the temple’s rabbi, the British Daily Star reported on Monday.

Chabad Rabbi Michael Oishie, who lives in the city of Zaporozhye in southeast Ukraine, spotted the ball of white light on closed-circuit television footage taken in the early morning hours.

The footage shows the bright light appearing out of nowhere and floating around the synagogue’s parking lot for 20 seconds before disappearing.

Rabbi Oishie, who is from Jerusalem, posted a 32-second video clip of the incident on his Facebook page and said he believes the hovering light was a lightning ball, a rare atmospheric electrical phenomenon also known as a fireball.

One of the rabbi’s Facebook friends responded to the video with his own explanation, saying, “Infrared light can ‘blind’ the camera. It was someone with an infrared flashlight.” Another simply called the sight “creepy.”
