The US-Israel defense relationship makes America safer, a US defense official wrote in Defense One on Monday.

This, wrote Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Policy Matt Spence, is because of Israel’s superior Mideast capabilities, which provide the US with critical intelligence and technology, as well as military expertise. Just last week, Reuters reported that Israel and Jordan carried out joint air force exercises in the US.

However, Spence said, the US-Israel relationship should go “beyond dollars for the Israeli defense budget.” The US currently provides Israel with $3.1 billion in “Foreign Military Financing” every year, as part of a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding set to expire in 2018.

Spence said the US and Israel should negotiate a “new Security Memorandum of Understanding,” which is a formal guarantee for “US security assistance to Israel” for at least the next decade.

Spence’s comment came as President Barack Obama welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Monday for their first direct meeting in over a year. Netanyahu was apparently seeking to raise US military assistance, perhaps setting the parameters for the next 10-year memorandum that would last until the end of 2017.

The deputy assistant defense secretary called for an “Innovation Race” based out of Silicon Valley and Israel’s so-called “Silicon Wadi,” the stretch of coastal plain where much of the Jewish state’s famous high-tech industry is based. He said the US and Israel should “innovate together against our enemies.”

The US should also sit down with its close Mideast allies — Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia — to asses common threats in the region, such as ISIS and Iran, said Spence. The countries should analyze the region in terms of Russia’s growing military involvement in Syria, he said, as well as the impact of ISIS on Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan.

Israel is a strong Nation without the U.S.

Israel is strong because it is 1)an industrialized Nation, 2) has access to economic resources globally, and 3) blosters a strong military defensive capability. Research the facts behind these statements…

Balance: the U.S. needs a foreign policy that address the needs of the middle east nations – not a “one size fits all” policy approach.

What does the middle east really offer the U.S.?

Can the U.S. redirect its efforts to reduce its own debt first before it reaches out to other nations. Afterall, when the dollar collapses we all go down! I believe this is where they will find their “safety” and global/hegmonic effectiveness.

  • The reason the US has so many enemies in the Middle East is because US politicians from both parties show preference to Israel over all other nations in the region. They also put Israel’s interests above America’s interests. If the US had a balanced Middle East foreign policy we would have far fewer enemies.

    • If the American politicians favour Israel over other mid-east nations [and I don’t think they do or they wouldn’t have signed up with an obscurantist Iranian regime] then there is a good reason. They, the Americans, have no other reliable friends in the ME.

Israel’s interests are not above America’s. There is no tail wagging the dog in foreign policy. The opposite is true. Why? The reasons are many and not simple. Right wing government [ by one vote], Netanyahu’s personality, the “settlers” issue, Syria, Russian involvement, alleged ISIS involvement in tourist plane bombing, the Kurds…the list goes on. The blood that flows through Israeli veins is the same as yours or mine. The principles that Israel espouses, sometimes albeit clumsily, are the point.

“If the US had a balanced Middle East foreign policy we would have far fewer enemies.” Wrong. Just as many. The difference would be you, the ZuS, wouldn’t know it.

Bob Johnson, you are better off running cheesy motels than commenting on foreign policy. Your assumptions are WRONG and have been disproven.

Fundamentalist Muslims hate the US no matter what the US does. Short of converting to their particular brand of Islam the US will always be on the hit list of the fundamentalist Islam and its’ followers. Al Qaeda didn’t give a rat’s tuchas about Israel, yet they still had the motivation and determination to attack the US at least 5 times before blowing up the World Trade Center. ISIS is the same way, yet they motivate their fighters to attack the US and murder Americans. Hezbollah didn’t blow up the US marine barracks in Lebanon because of US policy towards Israel, it blew up the Marine barracks because it is a proxy for Iran which HATES the US. And this hatred of the US predates any assistance the US gave to the State of Israel.

The Arab / Muslim street is dominated by dictators and their anti-American propaganda machines. At any given time there are no less than 5 or 10 inter religious and inter ethnic conflicts between Arab / Muslims that destabilize the region—regardless of Israel’s existence of US relations with Israel. Israel is actually a stabilizing force in region and has intervened many times to prevent one Arab country from over running another.

Obama has made every attempt to distance the US from Israel. In early 2009 Obama told Jewish leaders that the Bush Administration had been too friendly to Israel and that it was important to create “daylight” between Israel and the U.S. If Obama has succeeded in anything during his 7 years in office, he has suceeded in doing this.

Yet the Arab / Muslim world is in flames and they still hate the US.

So go back to running your cheesy motel chain and leave the political analysis to everyone else.

You might recall Israel’s bombing of Isilrik, the Iraqi nuclear site. Think of what would have happened years later when the US invaded Iraq if Isilrik had produced nuclear weapons. This is just one of many examples of Israel covering America’s rear end.

What a naive and biased comment you make. It’s also absurd.

Without israel America would be very vulnerable

  • Jerry

Great idea!! Too bad the administration is not FOR Israel but against her.

  • jakob wasi

Fifty percent of US military aid goes to Israel. So the Zionist state is a steel plated giant. And yet, the danger is within. Israel is in crisis: how are the Revisionists going to fund the fecundity of the ‘haredi’? Little wonder emigration of secular Jews is growing. Why should they continue to shoulder the burden of Yeshiva bueckers?

  • Tony trenton

The US funding is spent in the US. It is NOT a free gift !!!

The fake PA on the other hand are always dipping their hands and feet into the Cash Cow of the US and to EU with nothing in return but threats, threats, and more threats !!!

  • Michael Mayben

It’s about America’s Military are speaking in favor of Israel’s importance to America in the Middle East!

  • More Lies put out by Zionist, Zionist had been the Major cause of stifle between US and Arab countries since 1948.
Or to Quote the Greasiest American of the 20th Five Star General George Marshall said that putting a Homeland for Jews in the Middle of the Arab World would destabilized the hold Region. Truer words have never been spoken.
Israel uses US has a Whore,Nothing more, until another 1933 occurs!
Then it’s too Late AGAIN !
Accept the Arab Peace Plan of 2003 or change your name to Masada.

William, You speak Anti-Semitism loud and clear. Israel is the ONLY democracy in the Middle-East. It is the only safe country for Jews, Muslims, Christians and others. Did you mourn when Hitler committed suicide? Shame on you!!!

    • American Jew

      William, complete BS.

  • nelson marans

Unfortunately the Defense Department and Obama do not see eye-to-eye when considering the importance of a strong Israel. During his administration, Obama has done every thing in his power to break the ties that unite the two democracies, Israel and the U. S.

    • Bryna Weiss

That is also absurd. Obama may have a tense relationship with Netenyahu, but his support for Israel has never wavered.
