JNS.org – Famed Israeli violinist Itzhak Perlman will be among the 17 recipients of America’s Presidential Medal of Freedom next week. He is the fourth Israeli to receive the highest civilian honor in the US.

“A native of Israel, he came to the United States at a young age and was introduced to Americans broadly when he appeared on the ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ in 1958. Mr. Perlman made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1963 when he was 18,” a White House statement read.

Perlman was a soloist for several major film scores, including “Schlinder’s List,” for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score. He and wife teach young musicians through the Perlman Music Program. Perlman is also an advocate for people with disabilities.

  • Perlman is a brilliant violinist who puts a lot of heart into his music. There have been a whole lot of superb Jewish violinists in the past two or three decades, and he definitely ranks up at the top. And it’s inspiring to see someone with a handicap reach such a high level of accomplishment.

I just wish he hadn’t agreed to play under Barenboim’s baton.

Perlman was blessed with a gilded talent that even his disability couldn’t rob him of. His passion for music and the arts has played a compelling role in his life and accowledges music and its masters of all persuasions. Just watching Perlman perform brings joy to my life. His violin sings to my heart.
