A Hassidic Jew who was assaulted in the lobby of a New York City office building on Monday said security guards and witnesses in the vicinity did nothing to stop the attack, The Algemeiner has learned.

“He punched me in the neck and there was security [there] and nobody interfered. They were just watching,” said the victim, who asked to remain anonymous. “I got bruised… and security didn’t even call 911, nothing. They’re just standing there and watching.”

Yoni Davidov, who witnessed the attack from a nearby coffee shop, told The Algemeiner, “It bothered me that no one attended to the man. People were just watching. [They] didn’t do anything. It was also shocking to me how everyone in the lobby and in the adjacent Starbucks was sitting quietly and no one even called the police or offered the man any help.”

Davidov posted a description of the incident on his Facebook page and provided more details in an interview with The Algemeiner. He said it began at around 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of 575 5th Avenue, which houses the corporate office of L’Oreal USA. The victim was sitting at a table and eating a sandwich, when an “Arab-looking” man demanded that he move. According to Davidov, the assailant didn’t want to share a table with a Jewish man.

Davidov said the victim told the man that he had arrived at the table first, and that he would finish eating quickly and give up his seat. Then, Davidov said, “This Arab-looking man punched him in the face multiple times, before fleeing the scene with his girlfriend.”

“I was shocked at the anger this animal had when he was assaulting this poor Hassidic guy,” said Davidov, who then approached the victim and told him he was going to call the police. The latter purportedly refused, on the grounds that he did not want to draw attention to the attack.

“I was trying to convince him, telling him that this type of hatred isn’t only directed at him, but is a direct threat to all Jews, since this was an outright hate crime,” Davidov explained. “He still refused, saying he doesn’t want to make a big deal. I was going to call the news stations so they can arrive and he almost started crying, saying that he didn’t want to blow this up, since it is improper in his community to go public on TV.”

In a subsequent interview with Shomrim, a volunteer Jewish neighborhood watch organization, the victim said that police later arrived at the scene and spoke to a witness. They also examined security-camera footage of the attack.

The victim declined to speak with The Algemeiner further about the incident, sounding too shaken to recount his ordeal. L’Oreal USA did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

In conclusion, Davidov asserted that the attack was “definitely a crime of hate! There was no other motive.”

The victim had an obligation to stand up in the face of wrong/doing, and if he couldn’t act in his own defence; he needed to report the assault to protect others; and stand for justice. It was a mistake. Judaism teaches that one is to distinguish between friend and foe; and fight any enemy if not directly, indirectly – but always with the strength and power of being on the side of justice for what is right. Those who watched and did nothing either didn’t know the difference between right and wrong or were too terrified to act. It was a mistake to do nothing. No Jew, Muslim or member of any meother religious minority should be subjected to a public beating for just being who they are. It is, after all America. If the perpetrator was a Muslim; that community has been shamed; and it has an obligation to find and legally punish its own; and to stand up against religious bigotry and persecution. If this seems naive; then it shows how low some of us have fallen.

    • The Queen

The victim did file a police report. And he could very well act in self defense. He made a decision not to attack the Muslim as it would most certainly have caused rioting by the Muslim population against the Jewish population in New York City. Remember Crown Heights?

      • Dommy

I remember well. Crown Heights riots happened because New Yorkers — i.e. blacks and stupid leftist NY Jews — voted in a black leftist Mayor (passive weak David Dinkins) over of a tough, proven lawman, Israel-friendly Rudy Giuliani.

Liberal Jews: their own worst enemies as usual!

I don’t know why security guards didn’t interfere, or at least call the police. But I do understand the seeming indifference of the people watching the attack. And I don’t necessarily ascribe it to antisemitism. Recently I and several other people witnessed a fight outside of a local drugstore. At the time I didn’t realize it was a man on the drugstore staff trying to stop another man who had been shoplifting. The situation looked very dangerous and several people, myself included, shouted “call 911”. I am sure we all had cell phones, but we were all so shocked by what was happening that no one made a move to do the right thing. The fight ended and the shoplifter ran off. The staff member had gotten some of the goods back, but not all. Fortunately he was not hurt. But I am sure he was afraid that the criminal had a gun or knife and so were the bystanders. I felt guilty afterward that I hadn’t called 911. But I now realize that it is hard to judge others in such a situation unless you have also been in it.

In the South, we practice our Second Amendment rights. A similar incident here might easily have ended with a mortally wounded assailant. Sorry good New Yorkers, you put up with the Democrats who make excuses for your enemies, while restricting your Constitutional rights. Guess that’s why my family left Brooklyn in ’67.

  • mjazzguitar

Importing people inimical to the American way of life is subversion.

  • If I was was a Jew I would have knocked that piece of halal pork right back into his mother’s womb.

  • Yonit Gefen

While I understand the reasons, failure to register this as a Muslim on Jewish hate crime is both unfortunate and contrary to halacha — Jewish religious law — that requires a Jewish person to proactively do whatever he can to prevent harm to other Jews.

  • es hora de prepararse y responder a los ataques con fuerza, no poner la otra mejilla, debe de ser medida por medida, golpe x golpe, y respetaran

  • jdelaney3

Nothing against Hassidic Jews. Honestly. But, a guy or gal who is unwilling (for whatever reason) to defend oneself is his/her own worst enemy. No one is compelled by God to compliantly tolerate being brutalized. Reminds me of those hundreds of thousands of Jews in WWII who, like goodlittle sheep, were led to their slaughter with no physical resistance at all. You should make your assailant feel the fury of God and never go down without a fight.

    • The Queen

In your opinion the Hassidic Jew should pummel his assailant. Can you think ahead for a moment and try to visualize the reaction to that?

  • jdelaney3

FLASH: according to gov’t stats, there are FAR more assaults on Jews than on Muslims in this country, but the President, his leftist minions and their media lackeys purposely ignore it.

By the way, the lack of action on the part of security guards is a standard problem. Nearly all security officers are trained (and warned) that their presence is but a “deterrent” and that they are not permitted to physically intervene. Such would result in lawsuits against the security officer and his/her company. Stupid, I know. But, that’s the way it is. It’s a widespread policy which should be re-examined. Physical intervention would result in the security guard’s losing his job. Of course, the guard is still a human being, so doing nothing is indefensible. Sad. I would have lost my job. Oh well. Life is all about moral choices.

As for the urban “bystanders” who did nothing to help, that is an age-old urban problem. Nobody wants to venture out of his/her comfort zone. So much for courage and the moral imperative to help the other guy. Gutless wonders!

  • Robert B Geller

Of course, blame the Hassidic man for eating at the wrong restaurant, for dressing differently, or for the real reason – for being a Jew. Of course, if a gang of boys attacked a woman in Muslim dress, the mayor and the governor and the president would be all over the situation, and Loretta Lynch would be investigating, but a poor Hassidic man, forget it. But please remember, all you liberal secular Jews who voted for these people knowing their platforms and their goals. You should be the last ones surprised. According to the FBI records (which Obama has been unable to control), there are 3X more crimes of hate against Jews than Muslims, but the DOJ and the President are only concerned with those crimes against Muslims. No surprise here. Wake Up, and stop voting for these people.

    • Carlos winitzky

      You’re such an ignorant!

    • N de Leon

With you 100% God Bless Israel Genesis 12:3

    • frank

Those responsible for this blatant anti semitism should be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

  • Debra Tilstra

My heart and prayers go out to this Hassidic man and to all Jews as this was a hate crime. Those who saw the attack but never helped the victim are also guilty of antisemitism as they showed no compassion while this man was being attacked.
I fear that we will be seeing far more of this on American soil in the near future, but always remember that to far too many people, the Jews are always to blame, it is heartbreaking.

  • Carol

The Mayor of New York will of course call in the FBI for a federal investigation of this incident, oops oh yeah, that’s only if someone looked at a Muslim wrong.

It would be interesting to know if this man was actually a member of the Neturei Karta. It would be karma? Middah k’neged middah?

We are living in a failed state, and it will be getting much worse with Muslim invaders coming in to exact their religious promise that every last Jew must die before their end days. The mask that this is somehow about Zionism is falling off, exposing this utter evil and non-Jews are all too happy to let the Muslims take it out on the Jews, not realizing it’s the non-Jewish, non-Muslims next.

We must all begin arming ourselves with pepper spray, keeping a buddy system and learning martial arts. Maybe the Christians preach turning the other cheek and do not practice it, but it is not for us to offer ourselves as sacrifices to utter evil.

    • Yonit Gefen

Given the small number of Neturei Karta as a percent of total ultra Orthodox, this is unlikely, I don’t see payot. It is alarming that it’s ok to beat up a Jew who may not even be pro-Israel

    • The Queen

No the man is not Neturei Karta, he is from a mainstream Chassidus, I know him personally.

  • Bob

An Orthodox Jewish man was also assaulted at Medgar Evers College, in Brooklyn a few days ago.

  • Most security-guards get paid low hourly-wages plus very-few-if-any benefits and no chance for promotion.

Security Guard is a boring, low-paid, dead-end job that is usually filled by the least-educated, least-intelligent and least-motivated individuals; most employers will hire anyone-with-a-pulse to fill this job.

In other words: WE JEWS CANNOT RELY ON SECURITY-GUARDS TO SAVE US, as illustrated in the true story shown above.

    PS: * * * *

    • jdelaney3

Unfair and ill-informed. While there are dumb asses in nearly all trades and occupations, among security guards with whom I’m acquainted there are some very bright folk.s Many are working p/t and even f/t while going to college or looking for a better paying job. I personally know three guards, ALL with BAs still looking for a decent job in their field. The problem is security policy. These guys/gals are trained and warned NOT to physically intervene; they are told that their presence is but a “deterrent”. If they do intervene, they are fired. Why? The security agency and the guard are subject to lawsuits should they be anything more than deterrents. Stupid , I know. But, that’s the way it is. This policy should be re-examined and security companies better protected from litigation should guards take appropriate physical actions against criminals. This, of course, does not apply to armed guards which are few and far between.

  • Dommy

Arm up, Jews of the world!
Nobody is going to help you.
Arm up, train, and carry at *all* times.

  • No one helped because he didn’t help himself.

    • The Queen

He was worried about lawsuits if he dared defend himself. The headlines would scream, Jewish man assaults a muslim. No one would care that the Muslim instigated it.

  • brenrod

this is the muslim arab collective behavior, they have cast themselves into an existential enemy of the Jews. While the GOI stalk Jews who are not murdering Jews the Jew killers are daily murdering Jews.

  • judith grayson

we are now living in a failed state. actually, a fascist state. the people who live with a boot on their faces crushing them are paralyzed. they suffer from a fatal brain disorder of denial that will kill them.unlike the free actors our culture enabled, these are like pods from outer space. they feel themselves to have no power and worse, they have nothing to say anyway even if they had the freedom to say it. and, they are deeply spineless cowardly and crumpled up. in fact, the only place to live as a Jew of any kind is Israel. Israel, is what America once was. the America we knew is gone.

  • marlene

New York and California are the cesspool bookends of obama’s “fundamentally” transformed Amerika!

Blame Trump, the Republicans, Koch brothers and others of their ilk for creating the environment that allows hatred to fester and grow!

      • Strelnikov

        Sure. That’s it.

      • Fraide

Something is wrong with this story. A Hassidic is eating a sandwich in a restaurant? — Only if he brought the sandwich from home. Secondly, besides emulating 1933 Nazi Europe, the location of this terrible hateful act occurred in the L’Oréal building. The huge owner of multiple cosmetic products including “Vichy” products. Remember, Vichy — the French Nazi collaborators in WWWII. The have a product line named Vichy. Cute isn’t it.

      • Fraide

Don’t blame Trump, the Republicans, Koch brothers and others of their “ilk” for what happened. Blame the man who incited the attack. He obviously is following the mantra of somebody but should have a mind of his own and so should you! Each one of us is responsible for our own actions and consider the results of their actions. The attacker is the one responsible certainly not the list of people you want to blame.

  • Carol

This is the behavior these dastardly pieces of scum count on. They are cowards. I have seen the hate, want to kill, look in a loving Muslim eyes. Never before had I seen the intensity that was shown then. I grew up with Jew hatred, but had not seen the same look as was within the peace loving Muslim.

    • ZORKA

it is high time the truth comes out, I stand with you twofold, shame, and disgrace, words cannot explain,

  • steven L

That is not news. Not one smartfone in action!!! “Jew don’t matter”!

  • glenda urmacher

The building owner, and the security guard’s firm should be sued, and fired
It is incumbent upon any and all store owners to protect those people that frequent their building and support the business establishments.
As far as the patrons at Starbucks, shame on them all!
If four or five of them had confronted the arab looking creep, he would have back down.
I only hope one day they are in that same position, and no one goes to their help!

    • glenda urmacher

      no need for moderation
that is the whole damn problem
arabs beat, maim, kill and we look for moderation.
we will you learn that you are dealing with brain dead Neanderthals.

  • Max Genghis Cohen

In these times it should not shock and surprize a Hassidic Jew that an “Arabic-looking man” will suddenly assault him in public. In these times especially, a Hassidic Jew, because of his conspicuous dress, should learn self-defense tactics. If pacifism is the Hassidic mode of self-defense, then do dress less conspicuously. Few New Yorkers feel inclined to jump into the middle of another man’s fight.

    • Max Genghis Cohen, New Yorkers must recognize the new world. This means stepping in and helping, because this bias is not only against Jews its against democracy. I do agree that Jews need to look after themselves. But if the masses will not stand united against the new world terror, eventually all the self defence classes in the world wont help.

    • The Queen

The victim is strong as an ox and could’ve killed his assailant in self defense. And then spend the rest of his life in prison? He made a choice to not react, and by the way he did file a police report.
If a Jew hurts a Muslim the reaction will be riots. Why do you think that would be smart?

  • Dov

I know why this Hassidic man didn’t want to “blow up the story” because he is part of the group that visited in Iran and sided with Moslems and are against Israel. He is too embarrassed to stand up fir the truth, which is that the Arabs hate him as much as they hate all Jews, and when the Jews in Williamsburg will figure this out, hopefully it will not be too late.

    • David

No, he was probably just embarrassed that people in his very religious community know that he was sitting in a non-kosher restaurant..and that’s the simple truth here

      • The Queen

Hello? How dare you! He was sitting in the lobby of a building, minding his own business and eating a sandwich he had with him.

    • The Queen

Shame on you, for making up ugly stories about a person you don’t know. He is NOT from a fringe group.

  • michelle kahn

Sorry to say however these people come to the Western world to escape their middle eastern world. Then they want the Western world to move aside for them and don’t acknowledge freedom of religion. “Go back home if you don’t like us. Living the luxury of the USA is not fo you!

  • danny kid

10,000 more Arabs imported by Obama should improve the situation. That’s on top of the 100,000 or so that have been immigrating into the US over past few years.

  • dante

the security guard gets fired or demonstrators should shut the building down. the name of the owner and manager of the building should be made public, along with the remedial measures taken by them. if those measures are inadequate, SHUT IT DOWN.
